Power of the Pause

I’ve been talking about the power of the pause for several years now.

It simply refers to the great restorative power of taking an intentional pause during your day to take a deep breath, engage one of your senses, or turn your attention to how your body is feeling in this moment.

This intentional pause lets our brain know we are not in danger, in a crisis situation, or facing a threat. 

This intentional pause allows… science nerd alert… our parasympathetic nervous system to take over our body functions. 

In other words, it lets our bodies literally rest and digest. Our heart rate, blood pressure, and breathing rate slow down and our non-essential body functions, including our digestive and immune systems, start working normally again.

Yesterday, I was reading an article in Mindful magazine and came across this article by Andrew Swinand entitled The Six Seconds in Between.

What a thrill and blessing to see confirmation of these words - Power of the Pause. He writes about the six seconds it takes to take one deep inhale and exhale and how it helps you reset mentally and physically.

Your self-care mission this week is to take advantage of the power of a simple pause AND use it daily as many times as you need.
