“Hold on! Let me overthink this.” ~ my new t-shirt
Do you ever feel like it is hard to make a decision and stick with it? Or do you make a decision, think about it, think a little more, and then end up changing your mind?
OMG... I do too AND then I beat myself up and feel guilty.
I came upon this article that talks about procrastination which made me feel better about myself and why I handle my the decision making the way I do.
Procrastination actually finds its roots in our biology and it is the result of a constant battle between 2 parts of our brain.
One part of our brain runs on emotion and leans towards “feel-good” NOW and the other part runs on logic and leans towards what will benefit us in the future.
Guess what usually wins out? Yup … the first part - instant gratification.
The more we think, the less likely we are to do something that is good for us in the future. For example, eat this chocolate NOW or go for a walk with rewards in the long run … pretty sure chocolate will win most of the time.
What to do about it? …
First, stop beating yourself up - you are NOT weak and nothing is wrong with you.
It is our biology.
Second, break the task you are procrastinating about into smaller chunks so it’s more manageable and easier to do with more immediate gratification.
Third, set a timer for 10 minutes and do that task for just 10 minutes.
Keeping it simple to get things done.
Here’s to OVERthinking LESS and being MORE productive!
Be strong. Be healthy and keep up your self-care!
