“Cravings are not about food. Cravings are about stress.” ~Melissa Hartwig
As we continue into March, the Caffeine Awareness Month, I thought mentioning cravings and stress would be appropriate.
After weeks and weeks of elevated stress loads we enter the second stage of stress called, “the Resistance Stage”. This is where the excess stress hormones, cortisol and adrenaline, start affecting our brain and body chemistry.
In order to cope with the fatigue, increased anxiety, irritability, and other symptoms, our brains try to find substances to make us feel better. Enter … instant gratitude! Unfortunately, this will make us feel WORSE in the long run.
1st step - Awareness. Become aware of the craving.
2nd step - Distraction. Do 10 jumping jacks. Move. Do something! Read scripture. Journal. MAKE YOUR BRAIN SWITCH DIRECTIONS away from the craving.
3rd step - Repeat. Repeat. Over time decrease stress. Decrease cravings. Be consistent and persistent.
I promise you … your FUTURE self will thank you!!
Happy self-caring!
Hugs,
Rita 🙂 xo
