Sleep?

I want to sleep but my brain won't stop talking to itself.

Is it just me or are you waking up at 2 or 3 am with worrying thoughts swirling around in your brain, too?

My Mom used to complain about not being able to fall back asleep in the middle of the night and I never understood because I was such a great sleeper back then. Well, thanks to the inevitable process of aging, I now can understand what my Mom was talking about.

Another question… when you get up in the morning, do you even remember what you were worrying about? I don’t, but it sure seemed important in the middle of night. Arghhh!

So what do you do when you are incessantly worrying in the wee hours of the morning and can’t get back to sleep?

Our choices include the not-so-great tossing and turning until we fall back asleep OR how about try one of the following simple self-care tools? Find the one that works best for you.

  1. How about reciting the Lord’s Prayer over and over and over?
  2. Not for you? How about another prayer, positive affirmation, or mantra?
  3. Keep a notepad beside your bed - jot down your thoughts to get them out of your head.
  4. Have you heard of the “physiological sigh”? Take a deep inhale through your nose, then inhale again before exhaling through your mouth. Repeat 3 times. The benefits of this breathing technique include reducing stress, regulating emotions, and improving oxygen exchange.

Your self-care mission this week is to try one of the above techniques to help you fall back asleep or get to asleep in the first place.

Happy sleeping!

Warmly,  Rita 🙂
