How are You Carrying Your Stress?

And our stress awareness month continues.

In the long term, your body’s response to the stress is more damaging than the thing that triggered the stress in the first place. 

Just like the quote says, “It’s not the load that breaks you down, it’s the way you carry it.”

We all need a break from carrying our stress AND I am NOT talking about the beach trip coming up in a month or that occasional weekend off!!

I’m talking about those little intentional breaks or pauses you take throughout the day to let your brain know you are not under attack or in crisis. 

Your brain and body needs a break from stress regularly during the day. 

Imagine carrying a heavy box from one place to another that is over one mile away. (No, Uber is not an option!) Do you think you would put it down once and awhile to give yourself a break to rest and recharge? I sure would. What's the alternative? ... you will probably never make it to where you want to go.

Why is carrying your stress load any different than that heavy box? If you don't put your stress load down once in a while (as in… regularly during the day), you will most likely not get to where you want to go. In this case, the place you want to go is.. being healthy as you age and actually making it to your 70’s, 80’s, or 90’s.

All it takes is an intentional pause to do one of the following:

> a minute or two of deep breathing and wiggling your toes. 

> a short 5-10 minute walk on a break (you take breaks during the day, right?!). 

> writing your to-do list on paper to brain dump.

> stand up and stretchhhhhh.

> ask yourself - what can I control in this stressful situation? 

> 10 shoulder rolls to get the blood flowing in those tight neck/shoulder muscles.

Simple, right?! Easy, right?! 

What is stopping you from taking a stress break?

Keeping it simple, my friend. The journey to less stress and more joy  starts with self-awareness and one small change in your self-care.
